Flyers' rights movement growing
On Wednesday, the Senate Commerce Committee is expected to take the first steps toward establishing an Airline Passenger Bill of Rights, when it includes a version of legislation introduced by Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) in the FAA Reauthorization package. Joe Sharkey's column in today's New York Times -- Stuck on the Runway, Thinking Rebellious Thoughts -- details the stories of some of the passengers on American 556, and points out that:
There are no official numbers, but anecdotal evidence is persuasive. At least half a dozen of these torture fests have been well documented in the last five months, involving various airlines. According to recent testimony by Kate Hanni, director of the Coalition for an Airline Passenger Bill of Rights (flyersrights.org), the number of diverted and stranded flights is much, much higher than what the government admits to.
